The Art of Growing Abies Trees
Abies
Hardy evergreen trees, which are valued for planting on the lawn and in other, open spaces where their graceful and symmetrical form is fully displayed.
They are native to Northern Europe, North America and North Asia. Most varieties will reach a height of 200 feet but this will take many years to achieve.
The Abies Varieties most favoured by gardeners are Abies balsamae Hudsonia, a choice and slow growing compact subject developing into a rounded bush which is slightly wider than high. The young shoots are bright green in colour bursting forth during early summer, before changing to an agreeable dark green with age.
Also available is the compact Abies variety, lasiocarpa Compacta, a slow growing blue-grey conifer of compact conical habit.
The faster growing Abies trees are, Abies grandis probably the fastest growing, and the tallest of all silver fir, symmetrical in habit this Abies has glossy green foliage with white bands on the underside, the cones that develop are bright green in colour.
Also another fairly fast growing Abies variety is Abies koreana, this variety has a neat conical habit and will grow to 6 feet in height, the foliage is attractive all year round, the glossy green foliage on top stands out well with the white underside. Plants bear long, purple cones freely on quite young trees.
The largest of the Abies is the magnifica, the Californian Red Fir, needs a moist climate and deep soil, it has grey-green leaves and does not thrive on chalk. Several kinds of Silver Fir have been introduced from China and other parts of Asia, most notably Abies Forrestii, a tree growing up to 60 ft high with reddish brown shoots and handsome dark green, shining leaves which are silvery on the under side, bearing very beautiful purple cones.
